Text Box: Who Are Lions?

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization. Lions meet the needs of local communities and the world. Our more than 1.3 million members in more than 200 countries and geographic areas are different in many ways, but we share a core belief:

Community is what we make it.

With our Club recently celebrating its one year anniversary, we thought it would be a good idea to share info on Lions Clubs in general, as well as our Club’s personal style.

During our first year, while out in the community, we’ve heard many perceptions of Lions Clubs:
“I thought only men were in Lions.”
“Don’t you have a separate club for women?”
“I thought you had to be a business owner to be a Lion.”
“I thought you had to be retired to be a Lion.”
(we think they meant ‘old’ but were being polite)

So, we’re here to set the record straight.

Both men and women can be Lions. We find that we work well together, so no need for separate clubs.

Lions come from all circumstances.  While we do have business owners in our Club, we also have college students, employees, and retired persons. Everyone brings a different point of view to the Club providing us a good mix of experience.

We’ve got members from age 20 to 92.  There’s always a job to be done, whether you’re young and agile, or need a more sedentary duty.

What do we have in common? We’re community-minded individuals who live and work in Vacaville and surrounding communities.

Our Club currently consists of first-time Lions, creating our traditions as we go. We support the usual Lions Clubs areas of focus, including collecting and recycling used eyeglasses. We also provide support for Students Without Permanent Housing, the food bank, and the local homeless shelter.

If you’re interesting in providing service to your community, come check out one of our Club meetings.

Starting the year sorting things out

Sorting is often associated with getting organized. While we all need to get organized in some area of our life, especially this time of year, our Club is sorting in a different way.

You know all the food you donated during the holidays to the Food Bank?
(If you didn’t, we know you meant to.) Well, it obviously can’t be delivered to those in need straight from the food barrels. That’s where we come in.

Our Club will be at the Fairfield warehouse of the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano on Saturday, January 7th, 9:00am-12:00pm, sorting and packing food to be delivered throughout Solano County to those in need.

Want to start your year off right with a community service activity? (We know you keep meaning to...so there’s here’s your chance.) Come join us at 2339 Courage Drive, Suite F, Fairfield and help out. You’ll be glad you did.

Minimum age to volunteer is 11 years old, and we recommend closed-toes shoes and dressing in layers. If you plan to attend or need directions, contact Lion Earlene McKee at 707-372-8617 or mcearlene@aol.com.

One of our Club’s primary projects is providing support for VUSD Students Without Permanent Housing. We collect various needed items throughout the year and provide these to the school district for distribution directly to students that they have identified as being part of this group.

For January we’re collecting gift cards so the students can purchase needed items that are harder to collect. Perhaps they need new shoes or a coat. (Items that are pretty size- specific.)

We prefer Target or WalMart gift cards in any amount and will also be collecting funds to pool together to purchase additional gift cards. We’ll also accept restaurant gift cards.

If you would like to donate but can’t make it to a meeting, please utilize one of our convenient drop-off locations listed below:
